1. Information Is Civilisational Infrastructure
Human history can be read as a history of food, energy, territory, organisations or tools. It can also be read as a history of the systems through which people make meaning public, preserve it beyond memory, move it beyond physical presence, reproduce it beyond one performance, organise it beyond one mind and increasingly delegate its transformation to machines.
The Information Transmission Evolution Map treats communication as a layered civilisational infrastructure. It includes obvious media such as speech, writing, print, telegraphy, broadcasting and the Internet. It also includes the less theatrical machinery that makes those media usable: notation, storage surfaces, catalogues, authentication, addressing, processors, databases, ranking systems and provenance.
The map does not describe a procession in which each new invention kills its predecessor. Conversation does not disappear after writing. Manuscripts do not become irrelevant after printing. Radio survives television. Email survives social platforms. Printed books persist within a world of search engines and language models. Older forms remain valuable because communication problems differ. A method optimised for permanence may be poor for intimacy. A method optimised for reach may be poor for verification. A method optimised for speed may be poor for reflection.
The history is therefore cumulative and recombinant. New systems absorb functions from earlier ones, place them inside larger infrastructures and expose them to new forms of control. The smartphone incorporates telephony, photography, recorded sound, writing, maps, clocks, broadcasting and networked computing. A conversational assistant can combine language generation, search, databases, translation, speech interfaces and tool execution. Convergence increases convenience, but also concentrates dependency.
The strongest pattern across the map is not the disappearance of constraints. It is their migration. Communication becomes less dependent on co-presence, but more dependent on shared conventions. It becomes less dependent on memory, but more dependent on durable custody. Copying becomes cheap, but discovery becomes expensive. Distribution becomes abundant, but attention becomes scarce. Generation becomes easy, but authenticity becomes difficult. Every breakthrough removes one wall and reveals another room.
2. Embodied Meaning Before the Document
The earliest layer of the map is not a device. It is coordinated life among bodies.
Embodied non-verbal communication makes attention, affect, intention and immediate reference publicly inferable. Posture, gaze, gesture, facial expression and movement can guide joint action before information is formalised into a durable symbolic system. Vocalisation and prosody add controllable sound, rhythm, emphasis and emotional contour. Spoken language provides a compositional system through which people can communicate absent objects, imagined events, social obligations and abstract relationships.
Conversation turns language into coordination. It depends on timing, turn-taking, repair, feedback and shared context. Speech is not simply emitted content. Participants continually adjust to one another. Questions expose uncertainty. Repetition repairs misunderstanding. Tone changes force. Silence carries information. The receiver is not a passive endpoint but part of the production of meaning.
Music and patterned sound extend coordination beyond propositional language. Rhythm can synchronise groups. Melody, repetition and performance organise emotion and cultural memory. Oral tradition and storytelling preserve knowledge through repeated social performance. The community, not a passive storage surface, becomes the preservation system.
This early communication world is powerful but constrained. Information depends heavily on living carriers, memory, local context and repeated rehearsal. A story can travel, but changes as it moves. A performance can coordinate a group, but vanishes unless remembered or repeated. Authority rests in witnesses, elders, performers and communal recognition.
These are not merely primitive deficiencies awaiting rescue by writing. Embodied and oral communication retain advantages that later systems repeatedly try to recover: immediacy, feedback, emotional bandwidth, adaptability and social presence. Recorded video, live streaming, voice interfaces and virtual meetings all remediate aspects of co-presence because durable symbols alone do not exhaust human meaning.
3. External Memory Changes the Human Relationship With Time
Symbols and marks allow meaning to be attached to material objects. Tally systems, pictorial representations, tokens, seals, numerical notation and writing progressively externalise memory. Information no longer has to survive only through biological recall and repeated performance.
This is a profound transformation, but it is not one event. External memory develops through different representational systems, materials and institutional uses. A mark can count without forming language. A seal can authenticate without narrating. A diagram can preserve spatial relations that prose would express poorly. Writing systems connect visible marks to linguistic structure, allowing utterances, names, obligations, laws and stories to persist beyond the speaker.
Durable surfaces matter because representation requires a host. Clay tablets support inscription and administrative accumulation. Papyrus and parchment change portability, capacity and writing practice. Scrolls support extended linear documents. The codex reorganises the document into leaves, pages and openings, making random access, comparison, annotation and reference easier.
The document is not only stored language. It is an interface. Page order, headings, margins, indexes and binding determine how information can be navigated. A codex changes the reader's relationship to a long text because information can be located without physically unrolling everything before it. Navigation becomes part of information architecture.
External memory relaxes dependence on living recall, but introduces new dependencies:
- literacy and specialist interpretation;
- material production;
- custody and preservation;
- standardised signs;
- readable formats;
- institutional authority;
- access to stored objects.
A record can outlive its creator and still become useless if nobody can interpret its script, locate its context or gain access to its repository. Durability is not the same as recoverability. Storage becomes a chain linking medium, format, metadata, institution and reader.
4. Copying Turns Knowledge Into an Organised System
Once information exists as a durable object, reproduction becomes a central constraint. A unique record can preserve knowledge without distributing it. Scribal systems create trained labour, workshops, correction practices and textual traditions. They also introduce copying errors, scarcity and dependence on organisations capable of supporting skilled reproduction.
Printing changes the economics of copying. Woodblock systems, movable type, mechanical presses and edition-based production reduce the marginal effort required for additional copies. The consequence is not merely more books. It is a new publication system involving capital, paper supply, type, labour, inventories, retail networks, censorship, reputation and anticipated demand.
Mass copying expands the possible audience, but does not automatically create readers. Literacy, price, language, distribution and social permission remain decisive. Nor does abundance eliminate gatekeeping. Printers, publishers, states, religious authorities and markets determine what receives resources and legal protection.
Libraries, archives and catalogues become increasingly important because copied and accumulated records require organisation. A library provides managed access to collections. An archive preserves records in relation to provenance and institutional activity. Catalogues construct navigable representations of holdings. These systems do not merely store objects. They decide what enters a collection, how it is described, who can find it and under which rules it can be consulted.
Serial publication introduces recurring distribution and continuing public attention. Newspapers, pamphlets and periodicals organise information around schedules, topicality and repeat audiences. A public sphere depends not only on the existence of messages but on regular channels through which people expect new messages to appear.
Physical distribution systems, especially postal networks, connect copied records to addresses. The address becomes a social and administrative technology that makes recipients locatable within an organised territory. Authentication systems such as seals, signatures and institutional custody attempt to preserve identity and authority as messages travel beyond direct witness.
The period establishes a recurring pattern: when copy production becomes easier, scarcity shifts toward organisation, distribution, credibility and attention.
5. Electrical Systems Separate Communication From Material Transport
For most of history, long-distance information moved at the speed of a person, animal, vehicle, ship or visible signal. Optical signalling can transmit coded messages rapidly across lines of sight, but depends on weather, visibility, relay chains and prepared infrastructure.
Electrical telegraphy changes the relation between distance and delay. Messages are encoded into signals that travel through circuits. The physical object carrying the message no longer has to traverse the full route. Telegraph systems create networks, operators, codes, tariffs, routing practices and new expectations of timely information.
Telephony transmits changing acoustic signals, allowing remote conversation rather than only symbolic message submission. This restores immediacy, voice and interactive repair across distance. It also creates switching systems, numbering, service territories and powerful network operators.
Photography, phonography and film preserve aspects of experience that writing transforms rather than directly records. Images, voices, music and movement become reproducible artefacts. Recording separates performance from performer and event from audience. The same performance can be replayed, edited, distributed and incorporated into later works.
Radio and television turn transmission into scheduled mass broadcasting. One source can reach large dispersed audiences simultaneously. Broadcasting creates shared remote experience, but it also centralises control in transmitters, studios, regulators, spectrum allocations and advertising systems. The receiver may be widespread while the power to speak remains concentrated.
Satellite communication extends links across large regions and supports broadcasting, telephony and data networks. Fibre-optic communication later increases capacity by transmitting light through low-loss guided media. Yet capacity does not repeal geography. Cables, landing points, rights of way, amplifiers and routes remain physical infrastructure with owners and failure modes.
This era defeats some forms of distance while creating dependence on networks, standards, electrical power and institutional control. Communication becomes faster and more vivid, but increasingly infrastructural.
6. Programmable Information Makes Records Operational
Mechanical calculators and punched-card control show that representation can direct procedure. Electromechanical tabulation turns records into sortable and countable inputs. Binary digital representation establishes a common symbolic substrate through which text, numbers, images, sound and instructions can be encoded for machines.
Electronic digital computers expand this transformation. Information is no longer only read, copied or transmitted. It can be processed according to stored procedures. Programming languages and compilers reduce the distance between human problem descriptions and machine operations. They do not eliminate formal precision, but reorganise who must manage it and at which layer.
Magnetic digital storage provides rewritable machine-readable state. Database management systems separate logical data organisation from the particulars of physical storage. Queries allow users and applications to retrieve and transform records without knowing every storage detail. Time-sharing turns a scarce computer into an interactive service shared by multiple users.
These systems shift information infrastructure toward abstraction. A logical record can survive changes in hardware. A program can describe operations reusable across many datasets. A database can coordinate access by several users. The same abstraction that increases scale can also conceal complexity. A user sees a table while the system manages indexes, locks, buffers, storage devices and permissions underneath.
Programmable information also changes institutional memory. Decisions, transactions and identities increasingly exist as machine-processable state. Errors can propagate quickly because formal procedures execute consistently, including when the rules are wrong. Access control, data models and software maintenance become governance questions rather than only technical details.
7. Networking Produces Abundance and Interdependence
Packet switching divides traffic into units that can share communication resources. Computer networks connect hosts, while internetworking joins independently designed networks through common protocols. TCP/IP makes heterogeneity manageable by defining a shared packet layer and end-to-end transport behaviours without requiring every participating network to become identical.
Email creates addressed asynchronous communication among mailboxes. Bulletin-board systems, Usenet and Internet chat create persistent or synchronous social spaces. They demonstrate that communication infrastructure quickly becomes community infrastructure, complete with identities, norms, moderation, archives and conflict.
The World Wide Web makes resources identifiable, retrievable and linkable through a distributed application architecture. Publishing no longer requires an edition, transmitter or broadcast schedule. A resource can be updated continuously and linked into a broader information space.
Search engines respond to the resulting abundance by crawling, indexing, retrieving and ranking resources. They do not search the live Web directly. They construct partial, delayed and policy-governed models of it. Ranking becomes a major visibility mechanism. Publication and discoverability separate.
The networked era is often described as decentralising because protocols allow many independent systems to participate. That claim is only partly true. Open protocols can coexist with concentrated access providers, hosting companies, search engines, platforms and identity systems. Logical distribution does not guarantee institutional distribution.
The central scarcity migrates again. When information can be published and copied cheaply, the difficult questions become:
- What exists?
- Where is it?
- Which result is relevant?
- Which source is credible?
- Which identity is genuine?
- Who controls access and ranking?
8. Mobile and Social Systems Turn Communication Into a Continuous Environment
Cellular networks manage moving reachability. They divide geography into reusable radio cells and maintain subscriber service across changing locations. SMS adds compact store-and-forward messaging through service centres. Instant-messaging systems maintain conversation state, presence, contacts, delivery status and history across interruptions and devices.
Blogs and content-management systems separate stored content from presentation and make recurring Web publication easier. Social networking and microblogging platforms convert profiles and relationships into distribution infrastructure. A follow edge is not the same as a human relationship, but it is machine-readable, rankable and commercially useful.
Recommendation systems move distribution beyond one shared chronological order. Candidate generation, scoring and reranking construct different visibility sequences for different recipients. The feed becomes an attention-allocation system. User behaviour supplies feedback, but that behaviour is shaped by what the system previously chose to show.
Smartphones converge earlier media into a carried personal interface. They combine cellular access, cameras, microphones, sensors, applications, accounts and networked services. Cloud computing and storage place processing and state behind programmable remote services. Streaming systems adapt audiovisual delivery to devices and network conditions. Podcasts use feeds, media hosting and applications to maintain serial on-demand audio publication.
The apparent personal device is therefore part of a distributed system. Identity, memory, notifications, media libraries and application state often depend on remote accounts and infrastructure. Convenience grows together with platform dependency.
Audience also becomes a staged condition rather than a simple count. A follower may be eligible to receive a post without being shown it. A displayed item may not be noticed. A started video may not be completed. A completed playback may not be understood. Metrics represent selected technical events, not transparent access to human attention.
9. Machines Enter the Semantic Layer
Machine translation, speech recognition and text-to-speech move across linguistic and acoustic boundaries. These are not symmetrical converters. Recognition infers symbols from noisy evidence. Translation reconstructs meaning across languages. Big-picture essays creates a new performance from symbols and control signals.
Automated classification maps information to categories used by organisations. Content moderation then converts scores, thresholds and policies into actions. The classifier predicts. The institution governs. Accuracy cannot substitute for legitimate rules, proportionate consequences, notice or appeal.
Generative language models produce plausible symbolic sequences. Generative image, audio and video systems produce perceptual artefacts. Their outputs can be useful, expressive and realistic without being retrieved facts or authentic captures. Plausibility, realism, truth and authenticity must remain separate.
Conversational assistants combine models with dialogue management, retrieval, memory, tools and policy. Retrieval-augmented generation can improve grounding, but retrieved evidence, generated synthesis and claim support remain different tests. A citation can be present without supporting the sentence beside it. A response can accurately reflect a source that is itself wrong.
Autonomous and semi-autonomous agents extend mediation from explanation to action. A delegated system can observe, plan, use tools, change an environment and evaluate results. The unit of analysis becomes the action trajectory. Authority, permission, monitoring, stop controls and recovery become part of communication system quality.
Digital provenance and authenticity systems respond to the growing separation between appearance and production history. Signed claims can describe capture, editing, generation and publication chains. They can provide integrity and origin evidence without proving that the depicted event is true or that the signer acted honestly.
The late-stage communication problem is no longer only whether a message can arrive. It is whether the system can preserve evidence, distinguish generation from retrieval, expose authority, limit action and support correction.
10. The Information Stack Accumulates Rather Than Replaces
Across the seven eras, communication infrastructure develops recurring functional layers:
- expression;
- encoding;
- storage;
- reproduction;
- processing;
- transmission;
- discovery;
- distribution;
- interpretation;
- governance and trust.
A mature system may touch all ten. A social-media post begins with expression, is encoded into text or media, stored in databases, reproduced through caches, processed by classifiers, transmitted across networks, discovered through search, distributed through ranking, interpreted by people and machines, and governed through policies and identity systems.
The layers should not be mistaken for one centrally designed architecture. They accumulated historically through different organisations and technologies. Their boundaries remain imperfect. A search engine processes and discovers. A database stores and processes. A recommender discovers and distributes. A provenance system governs trust while attaching information to media.
The stack is valuable because it reveals hidden dependencies. A visible interface may feel simple only because complexity has migrated into infrastructure. One tap can invoke sensors, identity systems, databases, networks, ranking models, content-delivery systems and policy enforcement.
11. Power Moves With the Bottleneck
Each era creates actors who control scarce resources.
When communication depends on memory and performance, authority concentrates in recognised speakers, elders and performers. When durable writing requires specialist literacy, scribes and custodial organisations gain power. When copying requires presses and capital, printers and publishers become gatekeepers. When transmission requires cables, spectrum and switching, network operators and regulators gain leverage. When discovery requires indexes, search engines shape visibility. When feeds require ranking, platforms allocate attention. When model development requires data, computation and deployment infrastructure, model providers and tool operators gain power.
This does not mean every system becomes more centralised. Postal networks, the Internet, the Web and federated protocols can distribute participation. It means that control tends to gather around the current difficult layer.
The important analytical question is therefore not only who can speak. It is:
- who can encode information in accepted forms;
- who can preserve it;
- who can reproduce it;
- who can deliver it;
- who can make it discoverable;
- who can rank it;
- who can classify it;
- who can act on its basis;
- who can authenticate or correct it.
12. Progress Is Uneven and Historically Layered
The map's eras are analytical groupings, not dates on which humanity collectively changed operating systems. Oral transmission, handwritten records, broadcast radio, printed newspapers and mobile platforms coexist. Adoption differs by geography, language, infrastructure, law, wealth, disability and institutional capacity.
A system can be globally influential while remaining inaccessible to many people. A later technology can depend on earlier forms in hidden ways. Digital databases still rely on naming conventions, written language, tabular representation and institutional records. Artificial intelligence depends on corpora produced through centuries of human expression, preservation, copying and classification.
The website and visual map should therefore show overlap, persistence and revival. It should avoid a single ascending staircase labelled progress. The useful story is a branching and converging ecology in which old methods survive because they remain effective, affordable, trusted or culturally meaningful.
13. The Final Constraint Is Not Final
At the beginning of the map, communication is constrained by the reach of bodies, voices and memory. By the end, machines can generate media, combine retrieved evidence, converse across languages and act through software tools. It may appear that information has become frictionless.
It has not.
The friction has moved toward:
- attention;
- interpretation;
- verification;
- authority;
- consent;
- access;
- preservation;
- institutional accountability;
- recovery from automated error.
The ability to generate an answer does not guarantee a justified answer. The ability to imitate a voice does not confer identity or consent. The ability to execute an action does not establish authority. The ability to attach provenance does not establish truth.
Human communication history is therefore not a march from noise to perfect information. It is the construction of increasingly powerful systems for carrying, preserving and transforming meaning, followed by the continuing struggle to govern the powers those systems create.
The map begins with bodies trying to make intentions visible. It ends, for now, with organisations trying to make machine-mediated meaning accountable. Between those points lies a cumulative infrastructure through which civilisation remembers, coordinates, argues, teaches, trades, governs and imagines.
The central transformation is captured in the project's title:
The history moves from transmitting signals toward transforming meaning.
The next task is not to celebrate that transformation uncritically. It is to make its dependencies, trade-offs and lines of authority visible.
