What the organisation contributed
Amazon’s item-to-item collaborative filtering computed relationships among products so recommendations could be served efficiently even with very large customer bases and catalogues. Amazon S3 and EC2 in 2006 became influential commercial examples of storage and compute exposed through service interfaces.
Why it mattered
Selects and orders a manageable recipient-specific subset when available information exceeds manual attention. Reduces dependence on fixed local capacity, long procurement cycles and direct operation of every computing and storage component.
