What the organisation contributed

1 Bell Labs point-contact transistor Establishes the semiconductor-amplification threshold in 1947. The transistor emerged from Bell Laboratories research in 1947. Bell Labs' digit recogniser illustrates the small-vocabulary, speaker-constrained beginning of the field. Voder: Manually controlled speech synthesiser demonstrated by Bell Laboratories in 1939. Homer Dudley's work at Bell Telephone Laboratories established a foundational analysis-synthesis approach to speech.

Why it mattered

Reduces size, weight, fragility and power demands that tied radio reception to fixed household locations. Reduces the labour and delay required to convert speech into searchable symbolic text or commands.
