The first widely recognised operational SMS was sent on Vodafone’s network on 3 December 1992 from a computer to a handset and contained the words “Merry Christmas”.
Why it mattered
Provides compact asynchronous addressed messaging to mobile subscribers without requiring both parties to be connected or speaking at the same time.
