An organised postal system transforms message delivery from a personal arrangement into a repeatable network service. It standardises routes, relay points, authorised users, custody, schedules, addressing, payment or privilege, sorting and delivery expectations. The fundamental innovation is institutional continuity: a message can move through many hands and stations without the sender personally organising every stage.
Ancient states created dispatch networks to govern territory. Evidence for early systems is uneven and the word “postal” can misleadingly suggest modern public mail. The Achaemenid system is securely described through road stations, relay riders and official correspondence [1][2]. Herodotus describes the Royal Road’s stations and the famous swift relay in which riders passed dispatches from stage to stage [1][3]. Roman cursus publicus, Islamic barid, Mongol yam and other systems extended state communication through maintained routes and requisitioned resources. Most were primarily governmental, not universal services.
Modern posts added public access, standard rates, prepaid postage, stamps, street collection, sorting, home delivery and international interoperability. The 1874 Treaty of Bern created a single postal territory among participating states and became the Universal Postal Union [4]. The postal system is therefore an ancestor of packet-switched networking: addressed items enter a standard network, pass through intermediate topics and are routed toward a destination.
