Ada Lovelace was an English mathematician who translated Luigi Menabrea’s account of Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine and added a much longer set of explanatory notes in 1843.

Historical contribution

What Lovelace contributed

Her notes discussed how the proposed Engine could operate on symbols under rules rather than merely calculate isolated numbers. Note G set out a table of operations for calculating Bernoulli numbers, making the machine’s sequence of operations unusually explicit.

Why it mattered

The notes became a foundational text for thinking about general-purpose symbolic computation and about programs as ordered operations distinct from the physical machine.
