Historical contribution
What Gates contributed
With Paul Allen and Monte Davidoff, Gates developed an early BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800. Microsoft then adapted languages and operating-system software across hardware platforms and built licensing relationships that placed its software at the centre of personal-computer ecosystems.
Why it mattered
The model encouraged a large market in general-purpose software independent of one computer manufacturer and helped standardise programming and application platforms for mass-market PCs.
