What Thomas contributed
Charles Xavier Thomas patented his arithmometer in 1820 and later established sustained production. The device helped move calculation from rare cabinet curiosity into office equipment. Commercial success depended on manufacturing repeatability, training, repair and a market of institutions with enough repetitive arithmetic to justify the cost.
