What Bell contributed
Alexander Graham Bell, Chichester Bell and Charles Sumner Tainter developed the graphophone at the Volta Laboratory. Wax cylinders improved recording quality and reusability, while cutting methods reduced some limitations of tinfoil. Cylinder machines could often record at home, an affordance later consumer disc systems largely removed.
Why it mattered
Allows acoustic events to persist and be replayed independently of performers.
