What Shannon contributed
Shannon showed that logical propositions could be represented by switching circuits, helping turn digital circuit design into a systematic discipline. He later defined information in probabilistic terms, separating the engineering problem of reliable transmission from the meaning of a message.
Why it mattered
His framework gave communications engineers common measures for information, redundancy, noise and channel capacity. It also shaped digital coding, compression and later probabilistic approaches to language.
