What Hopper contributed
Her A-0 system linked symbolic call numbers to stored subroutines and is commonly described as an early compiler or automatic-programming system. FLOW-MATIC helped demonstrate that business programs could be written with English-like statements and influenced COBOL.
Why it mattered
Hopper’s work and advocacy helped move programming away from direct machine instructions toward languages, compilers and reusable software systems.
