What Gutenberg contributed
Gutenberg’s workshop demonstrated that alphabetic texts could be composed from reusable metal sorts and produced in substantial runs with controlled page design. The 42-line Bible became the best-known example of that production system.
Why it mattered
The system reduced the labour required to reproduce long texts and helped create a durable European trade in printed books, pamphlets and later periodicals.
