What Daguerre contributed
In 1839, Louis Daguerre’s direct-positive process and William Henry Fox Talbot’s paper-based negative experiments were publicly announced through separate institutions. Their systems embodied a lasting fork. The daguerreotype produced a highly detailed unique object.

Preserves detailed selected visual traces for later inspection and reproduction.
