What Nipkow contributed
Paul Nipkow patented a mechanical scanning disc in 1884, providing an important conceptual route to line-by-line image decomposition. Baird used mechanical scanning to demonstrate recognisable moving images in London in 1926. Mechanical systems proved that television could work, but image size, resolution, lighting demand and mechanical instability constrained them.
Why it mattered
Distributes synchronised moving images and sound to large dispersed audiences without separate physical copies.
