What Morse contributed
Working with Alfred Vail and other collaborators, Morse developed a single-wire recording system and a coded signalling practice. The 1844 Washington–Baltimore line demonstrated that a written message could travel electrically over distance.
Why it mattered
The system helped separate communication speed from transport speed and supported commercial telegraph networks, news distribution and coordinated administration.
