Historical contribution
What Miyamoto contributed
Miyamoto directed or shaped games including Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. His teams used movement, level design, audiovisual feedback and learnable rules to teach players through interaction rather than manuals alone.
Why it mattered
The work helped establish recurring characters, spatial exploration and responsive control as central languages of digital games and made game design a highly visible form of software authorship.
