What Cerf contributed
With Robert Kahn, Cerf developed the 1974 internetworking design that evolved into TCP/IP. He later worked on protocol implementation, deployment and Internet coordination through research, industry and standards bodies.
Why it mattered
TCP/IP allowed different packet networks to exchange data through a shared end-to-end architecture and enabled the Internet to grow without one uniform underlying network.
