Historical contribution
What Weaver contributed
Warren Weaver's 1949 memorandum framed translation as a problem computers might attack through context, statistics, cryptographic analogy and possible intermediate representations. It did not provide an operational system, but it helped organise a research programme around newly available digital computers.
Why it mattered
Reduces the labour and delay required to produce usable target-language representations.
