These dates should not be converted into the claim that art, symbolic thought or visual communication began in Sulawesi. Portable engraved ochres, pigments, ornaments and other symbolic materials from Africa are older or comparable in age, while most early painted or engraved surfaces have probably been destroyed or remain undiscovered [24][28].

It also signals an important distinction from:

“Cave art” is too narrow

“Art” imports modern assumptions

The English word “art” can imply:

There is no defensible invention date for rock art.

The current evidence establishes only a lower bound for surviving examples.

As of July 2026, the oldest demonstrated minimum-age constraint is a hand stencil at Liang Metanduno, Sulawesi, at least 67,800 years old [1]. The calcite above the pigment was dated. The stencil itself may be older.

7.2 Earlier visual marking

Portable marked objects demonstrate that deliberate visual patterning predates many famous cave paintings.

Examples include:

  • engraved ochres from Blombos Cave around 77,000 years ago [28];
  • an abstract drawing from Blombos levels around 73,000 years old [29];
  • ochre-processing evidence around 100,000 years ago, although pigment preparation alone does not reveal how the material was used [30].

These are not rock art in the strict fixed-surface sense, but they weaken any claim that durable wall imagery appeared as a sudden European invention.

7.3 The 67,800-year Sulawesi hand stencil

Important cautions:

  • the date applies to calcite that formed above the pigment;

  • the maker’s exact identity cannot be observed directly;

The Matobo Hills in Zimbabwe contain one of the highest concentrations of rock art in southern Africa, with imagery extending back at least 13,000 years according to UNESCO’s World Heritage documentation [6].

Direct dating remains difficult. AMS radiocarbon work on suitable carbon-based pigments has produced direct dates for southern African paintings, including Botswana examples between 5,723 and 4,420 calibrated years before present [14]. These are dates for sampled surviving pigments, not the beginning of southern African rock art.

Before a durable mark, visual communication depends on a living body or temporary arrangement.

Rock art allows a viewer to encounter selected information after the maker has gone.

Rock art allows a viewer to encounter selected information after the maker has gone. The image can preserve: - a form; - relationship; - presence; - scene; - identity; - sacred association. It does not need to encode a sentence to become information. A cave, cliff or shelter is not merely where the information happens to sit. It can determine: - who sees it; - how they approach; - what they hear; - what stories are recalled; - who has authority; - what the image means. Rock art can outlive: - its maker; - its language; - its community; - its political order; - its explanatory tradition. The mark survives, but the decoding system may die. Humanity already had durable images. The next challenge was to make visual signs: - more conventional; - more precise; - more portable; - more searchable; - capable of encoding quantities and language. That pressure leads toward: - pictograms; - tallies; - tokens; - numerical notation; - writing. > **Rock and cave art transformed natural surfaces into external memory, cultural landmarks and visual interfaces between people, places and generations. It solved the disappearance of the live signal, but it could not guarantee that future viewers would retain the key.**
