It made the first copy expensive and later copies comparatively cheap. That bargain reorganised labour, capital and authority around editions. Its importance does not depend on becoming movable type. The page block was exceptionally good at preserving integrated layouts, rare characters, calligraphic form and images. Stored blocks formed executable archives whose contents could return to circulation when patrons, markets or organisations demanded them. The topic therefore introduces three concepts that remain central throughout the map: matrix granularity, setup versus marginal cost, and reactivation. Every later reproduction system negotiates those variables, from metal type and stereotyping to offset plates and digital publication files.
