The earliest securely attested Mesopotamian texts emerged in the late fourth millennium BCE within the administrative environment of Uruk. Early tablets recorded quantities and commodities. Phonetic uses, including rebus strategies, expanded the system’s ability to represent language; by the middle of the third millennium BCE cuneiform served economic, legal, political, religious, literary and scholarly domains. Egyptian writing appears near the end of the fourth millennium BCE. Whether its development was entirely independent or stimulated by awareness of Mesopotamian practice remains debated, but its system and material history are distinct. [3]

Chinese writing is securely attested in late second-millennium BCE oracle-bone inscriptions, with earlier proposed signs requiring caution. Mesoamerican writing arose independently, with Maya script becoming a particularly elaborate logosyllabic system. [3][5]

Later script histories include adaptation, borrowing and redesign. The Phoenician consonantal tradition influenced Greek alphabetic writing; Greek adaptations influenced later alphabets. Brahmi and its descendants shaped a vast family of South and Southeast Asian systems. Writing history is therefore both invention and transmission.
