Gerald Linnell? Shares the last name with the painter of In Dovedale? Gerald Linnell played for Rhodesia and was a member of HDG Leveson-Gower's XI that was the first MCC team to tour Rhodesia in 1909/1910.

An interesting connection.
Some more information about Linnell, taken from Jonty Winch's "Cricket's Rich Heritage":
One year after his arrival in Rhodesia Linnell played an important part in Buluwayo's win in the 1897 tournament in Salisbury, the predecessor to the Logan Cup, with figures of 4-31 as Bulawayo thrashed Salisbury in the final by an innings. It seems he also for a while held a batting record in Bulawayo club cricket with an innings of 176.
In all likelihood he also turned out in 1899 when a Bulawayo XVIII took on the MCC, led by Lord Hawke (essentially England) and featuring the great Plum Warner.
Linnell's one and only FC appearance came in Rhodesia's first ever FC match, their Currie Cup debut (their first and last Currie Cup match for 25 years) against Transvaal in 1904/05.
An interesting collector's item, including a cricket ball presented to Linnell for a hat trick in Bulawayo club cricket, can be found here: https://www.angloboerwar.com/forum/bsac ... ertificate
Does that qualify him for a role as the "voice from the grave" in the "Last Rhodesian"?

Indeed it is! Very well done.
Strange that this guy was considered good enough to be selected for a Zimbabwe Presidents XI.
Anybody know anything about him?
