This massive 10-team round robin format was absolutely turgid and dreadful in 2019.

This is my current World Cup 2023 Power Rankings based mostly on current form, but slightly taking conditions into consideration:

1) India

2) England

3) South Africa

4) New Zealand

5) Australia

6) Pakistan

7) Sri Lanka

8) Bangladesh

9) Afghanistan

10) Netherlands

Just a couple of months ago, I would have had Bangladesh at 6...but both Sri Lanka and South Africa have really been on a tear lately. I will still say, if BD can gel...they can still finish in the top 5 or 6, but they will really have to improve by leaps and bounds from their current level. It CAN be done, but the odds are long.

It will all come down to how competitive teams ranked 7-10 will be. Top 6 - whoever they are at the moment - will probably all be in the running for the semifinal till the final round of group games. But will the likes of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh push for an outside chance? That will determine how exciting it will be. The excitement comes from not knowing who will win rather than a pre determined result. That’s what’s made the WCQ so exciting. NED came out of now where like Afghanistan in 2018. ZIM had qualification locked up, but faltered in the clutch both times.

For some reason I think this tournament will be exciting, despite a number of stars being out injured.

I’m getting super stoked.

Off the dome here, players to watch part I:

Najmul Hossain Shanto - 12 months was ridiculed and reviled…YTD is averaging 48 and that’s including a barren series vs Afghanistan where he scored 20 odd runs in three innings. Not highly rated outside of Bangladesh, but my prediction is 400+ runs in the WC will change that real quick.

Charith Asalanka - top notch stats, can he do it in big pressure situations?

Kusal Mendis - career average of 32 belies his tremendous talent but like Shanto he’s turned it on this calendar year. Good news is he is a big match player.

Harry Brook and Marnus Labuschagne - two players with tremendous profiles…in red ball cricket. Both only made the team as injury subs…can they translate their games into the 50 over format?

Haris Rauf - tremendous record…can he do it against the worlds best?

Jasprit Bumrah - can his body keep up with the rigors of throwing down 100+ overs of the highest intensity over the next 7 weeks?

Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz - tremendous record so far…how does that go on the biggest stage albeit in friendly conditions?

ICC should factor in who has a surplus of cash at year end and not just who brings in what. Another factor to be considered is corporate sponsorship. The big teams bring in millions. We of course have practically zero, partly due to a grossly mismanaged economy, a complete lack of interest in cricket from our captains of industry and an understandable reluctance to throw cash at an organisation that has a distinguished history in making money disappear into thin air.

Everyone understands that India bring in the big cash, but they have the American mentality of being happy with a World Series played internally.

Cricket is poorer without West Indies and Zimbabwe in the mix, plus there's now Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland, evidently Namibia, and a couple of others that would make great strides with additional funding. Plus the other African countries- Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda etc. The Third World guys have a magnificent tendency to liberate substantial funds so they don't help themselves.

Namibia's gun opener has had to apply for leave from his work to play in these qualifiers!

All these teams and their supporters look on at the Big Teams in frustration and support the underdog almost every time. Every small team has a couple of really good players that barely make a living and they watch the multi millionaire superstars that in many instances are either not thst much better or are better because of more opportunities.

Indian fans would be delighted if their team scored 1000 runs an innings and rolled the opposition for under 10, they have zero interest in a good game. They just want to hear Ravi Shastri say- India is just too strong and too powerful.

We are enjoying the comparative silence.

Ya Googly. Some of the incidents from WC.

1. Pakistani fan stopped from shouting slogans for his country

2. Bangladesh team mascot, the tiger, was torn apart and thrown in front of Bangladeshi supporters.

3. Bangladesh fan mocked with 'Kohli, Kohli' chants after the match to which he gracefully replied "very well played". Is this the way to treat our guests?

4. Kettlebourough booed when receiving his award, for giving an umpires call in favor of Australia... This was after Smith was wrongly given out.

5. Literally no foreign spectators/tourists thanks to a very poorly organized WC

6. Last minute change Or SF and Final pitches to used surfaces amidst disappointment expressed by ICC officials.

... No surprises that India is not liked as a cricketing nation now by anyone barring a few.

Also just the absolute wall of silence every time Australia did anything good. That Head innings was sublime, some unreal shots - all met with total silence. When he got his century, silence. When he was walking off, silence.

In almost every other country he would have been getting a lot of applause, respect, most probably a standing ovarian. He would have done here, he would have done in England, probably in every country.

Complete lack of respect and knowledge shown by the supporters in the stadium which is surprising as Indian fans always used to be regarded as extremely knowledgable. I’m not sure what’s happened?

Also the Indian commentators!!! f**k me. They made the final hour of that match sound like a funeral. So biased.

And the absolutely horrific social media abuse Aussie players and even their wives and kids have been getting on social media the last couple of days.

Who is the gun opener ? Van lingen or Nico Davin ? How good is Shaun fouche . Even JP Kotze is back now

We may like it or not but the status quo is that ODI is truly obsolete and T20 leagues keep widenining their market share. Just recently a new entry T20 league will be nothing less than the Olympic Games.

It's likely that in the near future all ODIs would disappear in favour of T20.

On the other hand I badly hope that Test can safeguard itself in a niche, provided it concentratates ALL world test matches in a couple of periods along the year. Test cricket is ulnikely able to sustain the "series tradition" has it has occurred so far.

Sad to say: Test series can't compete at all with T20 leagues.

A broadened WTC where all fixture are concentrated in two periods of time along the year, say two-three moths, could attract best players and consequently not suffering competition from T20 leagues.

It might be held in February between the end of Big Bash and start of IPL and in June-July.

Ashes would be something apart. Ashes anyway have their steady audience.

All of these T20 leagues won't retain their popularity, the tide will turn at some point.
