Just to be devils advocate, even though I have never heard of this guy before, maybe he impressed at the interviews with his hunger and vision?

The ZC approach over the last 20 years has been veteran coaches at the back of their peak:

Marsh, Butcher, Houghton, Streak, Whatmore.

We only saw glimpses of brilliance in the Streak and houghton era, but both failed at the key moment.

This is why we thought domingo was going to be the coach. Same sorta s**t.

This was peppered with the 'homegrown hero' phase of Waller for a year where not much cricket was played and Mangongo in the mid 20 teens, which was probably motivated by budget more than anyything. Waller came and went without a whimper and mangono didnt last 6 months after single handedly chasing out Taylor and grabbinga players nuts, showing no professionalism at all. That didnt work.

There is also Rajput but that was a political appointment.

What we havent really tried, since Simmons anyway (I dont think we can count this due to it being the beginning of the rebel era) is an up and coming coach wanting to make a mark on things.

He was also the batting coach to a successful batting team in SA, so worth keeping an open mind at least?

PS. I told you guys it'll end up being a saffer, its easy to convince a saffer to leave SA next door.

Zimbabwe a better country than SA if you have money.

Last point debatable - Zim better for the middle classes and reasonably wealthy, like cricketers and their coaches. SA still more pleasant for those with seriously huge money.

I hope you are right about this Salmon guy. But even if he was the world’s best coach and an absolute genius he is fighting a losing battle. He’s only just got the job and his first assignment is India, in our worst format, in less than three weeks. Brutal.

Doesn’t help that the board in all their wisdom have decided the best prep for a T20 series was a couple of 4-day intrasquad games and the 45-over club-level NPL.

He’s got a bloody hard job.

We have an ongoing issue where the black batsman regress with age.

Wes is going backward, Musakanda has done nothing since he hit that hundred against SL in 2017. Hamilton didn't get better than when he was a teenage prodigy.

List goes on.

I can only think of maybe Roy Kaia who has bucked that trend, even so nothing huge. It was also documented how driven he was to get better and maybe that is a clue.

Compare this to Raza, who ten years ago was a bit part cricketer then who was in and out of the team. Ervine spent years in and out of the main side and only really hit his straps around 30. Willo improved.

Campbell is clicking into gear very nicely.

I think if we can figure what is causing this out, we might unlock our potential.

The only real prospect of success for a Zimbabwean coach is the occasional victory over a full member and perhaps qualifying for an ICC tournament now and then. Maybe we can push for a 24 team T20 World Cup to give us a better chance of qualification. As jonty said, we have about 4 good players and the rest are just not good enough, even against other Associates.

I agree on Dion. That's not a bad appointment.

Director of cricket - Hamilton Masakadza's previous role, if I remember correctly. :)

Hamilton is doing effectively the same role he was doing six months ago, for the same salary, except now he won't be held responsible and they've set Dirk up to be the fall-guy next time something goes wrong.

I've never said he's s**t. I just don't think he's anywhere near as good as you guys keep saying. His name is penned into every game and I question that. He's going to get every opportunity under the sun so let's see how he progresses.

Salmon's appointment and his staff are certainly a big departure from what we've seen in the past. I'm behind them all the way. I'm skeptical about South Africans in general, we are oil and water with those guys as a rule, let's hope this crew are the exception.

They also know they're third prize. That's an interesting start to any relationship. Stu remains their inside man.

Who knows what he's negotiated as far as input into the selection process goes. I'll guarantee ZC have ensured they have the right of veto thru Mutendira. He remains their inside man. ZC have covered their bases and still have both hands on our wheel of misfortune. In a few months he'll have an idea of who the good guys are, but whether he can put them on the park at once is unlikely.

Nothing to quench a guy's mojo faster than being told to do his best with A,B & C instead of X, Y and Z.

The people saying we've got 4 good players are talking s**t.

We've got enough guys here to make our team competitive.

They need the right coaching and the right environment. We've had neither. Even guys like DH I believe have been a bit generic. Get into a guy's head and understand how he ticks and help him as an individual. It's not rocket science, but not easy having to do that with 15 guys.

I've been watching this NPL avidly. We've got some good players here, it's a game of millimeters.

Salmon timed his arrival well. Not here long enough to take blame for a 5-0 hiding but will happily take credit for a surprise win.
